The Happy Nomad: Live with less and find what really matters by Charlotte Bradman
Here’s my review:
“A story of resilience, transformation, and finding a way forward after an extraordinarily tough start in life.”
REVIEW
Not the book I expected – but one that stayed with me
I picked up The Happy Nomad expecting a travel memoir about life on the road. It isn’t quite that. Instead, it is the story of Charlotte Bradman’s extraordinary journey from a childhood marked by brutality and abuse to the life she has created for herself.
It’s not a book I would necessarily have chosen had I known what lay behind the title, but I’m very glad I read it. It is humbling and sobering to realise the appalling beginnings that some people have to overcome – and hugely inspiring to see what Charlotte has achieved despite her early experiences.
There is a great deal of wisdom and self-awareness here. Charlotte has clearly undergone an extreme personal transformation, and her reflections on what makes us happy, what society expects of us, and the price we sometimes pay for conforming to those expectations are thought-provoking. Charlotte’s story offers a very different way of looking at what we actually need to live a fulfilling life.
I found myself particularly reflecting on her observations about modern life – mortgages, debt, working all hours to make ends meet, and the relentless pressure to live a ‘normal’ life, however damaging that might be. It made me wonder whether some of the frustration and dissatisfaction experienced by her abusers was itself fuelled by lives that had become disconnected from creativity, freedom, and simply being. It certainly doesn’t excuse their behaviour, but Charlotte’s reflections made me think about how unhappy and frustrated people become when life becomes a daily struggle to survive.
I found the timeline jumped around a little, which occasionally left me trying to work out where I was in the story. And I did find myself wondering whatever happened to Warren!
But those are minor quibbles. Ultimately, The Happy Nomad is a story of resilience, transformation, and finding a way forward after an extraordinarily tough start in life.
Not the road-trip memoir I expected, but a far more profound journey than I had anticipated – and one that resonated with me as someone who has chosen the nomadic life for myself.

‘What an amazing and inspiring read.’⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
‘Reading the book is like making a new, witty, warm and wise friend.’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
‘The Happy Nomad, which has been described as Raynor Winn’s The Salt Path on wheels.’ – Margaret Hussey, The Telegraph
‘A gripping, sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking account of how one woman lost everything and how, by stepping off the path, she found her way.” – Ben Fogle, writer and presenter
‘Proof that water in the form of driving rain, wild river, icy lake, or turquoise ocean can build back a body, mend a tattered mind, heal a broken heart, and soothe a weary soul.’ – Dr Wallace J Nichols, marine biologist and author of Blue Mind
‘Extraordinary . . . a glimpse into a future of endless possibility.’ – Martin Dorey, travel writer
‘This book is tremendous. A book that takes you to places of real sadness and trauma. But also to the freedom and joy of saying no to stuff and debt, and hello to the open road with a joy and delight in life and people that enchants. With a dash of politics along the way, The Happy Nomad makes you really think about what it means to truly live rather than just have. And to ask what, really, does home mean to us as individuals. A wonderful, evocative, thoughtful delight of a book.’ – Peg Alexander, Broadcaster, Journalist, Presenter
A truly inspirational memoir for anyone who dreams of leading a different life.
Vivid, self-confessional and darkly humorous, The Happy Nomad is the story of how Charlotte Bradman breaks free from her turbulent past, mounting debts and the nine-to-five treadmill, and finds a simpler way of life living full-time in her beloved campervan. Freed from the burden of a thirty-year-old boiler on the edge, temperamental ceilings that don’t like heights, and letterboxes that mercilessly allow bills and arrest warrants through, Charlotte finds joy in a life lived closer to nature. Stripped back to the very basics, no longer weighed down by material possessions, she discovers the precious gift of time, enabling her to connect with both herself and the people she meets, and to re-evaluate what it truly means to thrive.
The Happy Nomad is a gripping account of how one woman lost her house and found peace and contentment in her campervan home.
