REVIEW

I’m a fan of Alan Davies on programmes like QI, so I picked up Just Ignore Him expecting something quite different. This is not a funny memoir about life in comedy, but a deeply personal account of a childhood marked by abuse and neglect.

It is an uncomfortable and sometimes difficult read, but an important one. Davies describes a childhood that is a world away from the successful career he eventually built for himself, and the contrast is striking.

I was left wondering why he chose to write the book. At times, it felt almost like a download – as though he simply needed to get this story out. But perhaps that is part of its power. It doesn’t feel overly polished or packaged; it feels like someone finally telling the story of what happened to him.

Whatever his reason for writing it, Just Ignore Him makes a powerful point about how profoundly a person’s start in life can shape them – and how it doesn’t necessarily determine where they will end up.

I came to this book as a fan of Alan Davies the comedian and finished it with a very different understanding of the man behind the comedy.

An unexpected, uncomfortable, and ultimately thought-provoking read.
