If you’re looking for a humorous travel memoir which chronicals the life of an expat in Spain’s Andalucia region, look no further!
Here’s my review:
Warm, observant, and very funny
The moment I opened this book, I knew I was going to enjoy it. The story about the birth of the author’s writing career – involving a run-in with a Mother Superior – quickly confirmed that.
The book is a collection of anecdotes from the author’s Andalusian retirement, which makes it easy to dip into. Although it is the second book in the series, each story stands comfortably on its own.
Drew Johnson has an easy, conversational writing style, occasionally breaking the fourth wall to great comic effect. It’s witty, beautifully observed, and carries an unmistakable twang of northern English humour – which I appreciated, being from ‘oop north’ myself.
The book is refreshingly honest, detailing a steady stream of mishaps and misadventures – including some highly embarrassing spider bites. It also delves into the realities of living through COVID abroad, the author’s writing journey, job search, and a recurring tendency to collide with authority. And perhaps it’s best not to mention the golf…
Warm, observant, and very funny, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am delighted I have two more in the series to look forward to.
I received a copy of this book as a prize in a competition, but am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Book 2 of the Andalucian Adventures series
After surviving their first year in rural Andalucía, Drew Johnson and his wife, Chris, are back to stare down the barrel of more ridiculous Spanish red tape amidst a series of unprecedented storms and floods that hit the area, not to mention the start of a global pandemic.
Having spent six months enjoying an early retirement, Drew jumps with his usual gusto into a new career as a budding novelist whilst trying to find a proper job to help pay the bills. Meanwhile, in an effort to give something back to the local community, Chris volunteers with a wildfire group.
Hurtling headlong through life as he does, Drew goes into battle against unscrupulous accountants, a bewildering tax system and his private health company. With life still trying to throw him off his stride with car crashes, medical emergencies, a leaky swimming pool and the need to move house again – not to mention a devastating burglary – Drew continues to laugh in the face of danger … that is until he meets his match in the shape of THAT BLOODY SPIDER!
